Black Lives Matter Protest

Black Lives Matter protests planned this weekend in Maine | newscentermaine.com

The First Amendment specifically states citizen’s freedom of speech. Freedom of speech has shown to be one of the most important parts of the constitution. Freedom of Speech gives citizens of the United States the right to stand up for what they believe in. Freedom of Speech is followed by the right of the people peaceably to assemble, which includes forms of peaceful protest. One of the most prevalent protests and examples of freedom of speech I have ever witnessed is “Black Lives Matter” (BLM). The BLM movement was strung into full force after the death of George Floyd. Protesters started off the movement by fighting for Floyd and his brutal death due to police vitality. These protests turned out to develop a huge showing and were able to catch media attention all over the country. As talked about in the CNN article, BLM protests had over 5 times as many attendees than any other protest, which shows the amount of public interest. Peaceful Protests have made a huge impact on American history and has been proven to work. Just think, without the March on Washington in 1963, civil rights would not be where they are today. Influential change can be made by peaceful protests, not looting.

Without the Six Freedoms, no one would be able to protest for George Floyd or the

black community. While there has been a lot of controversy within the protests and the

media surrounding them, it has mostly shown up as protesters using their rights in the

First Amendment. But, there have been some cases in the BLM movement where protestors’

actions are not protected by the first amendment. Ariel Atkins, a BLM Chicago Organizer

said, “I don’t care if somebody decides to loot a Gucci or a Macy’s or a Nike store because

that makes sure that person eats. That makes sure that the person has clothes. That is

reparations. Anything they want to take, take it because these businesses have insurance.”

This is just an insane quote to me. No one should be dismissed from looting and destroying

property, no matter the situation. These types of protests are not condoned by the First

Amendment and never should be.
